A Set-Top Box for On-Demand TV & Interactive Services
In a move Pace Micro Technology hopes will drive wide-scale deployments, the
company is offering its first sub-$100 IP-based set-top box targeted at broadband operators and
telcos with plans for high-volume interactive TV service deployments. Pace says the DB210 creates
an advanced but cost-effective set-top box product that will enable operators to deliver on-demand
broadcast television and interactive services.
The DB210 hardware and software is optimized, says Pace, and uses single chip silicon, as well
as efficient use of flash and memory. The product, which will be available for commercial
deployment in early 2005, offers MPEG 1/2 MP@ ML decoding with 490+ aggregate MIPS processing
power and can support a wide range of middleware, video server and content protection products.
It is compatible with existing head-ends and uses HTML/JavaScript-based products to support the
user-interface and advanced interactive services. It also provides two-dimensional graphics, alpha
blending, full video scaling and picture-in-picture capability.

Consumers Given Control with New TV Channel Blocker
Blonder Tongue Laboratories is putting parents in control with the release of its
Parental Controlled TV Channel Blocker (the TVCB-PC). The TVCB-PC allows parents to control what
channels are being viewed in their household, even when a set-top box is not on the TV or with
older TVs that do not have V-chips.
The TVCB-PC has push-button control in the unit, enabling the parent to change analog channels
they want to block for the entire house — no matter how many televisions exist. There is no
interface with the billing system required, no management system and no transmitter. The unit is
installed off the tap port and can be wall mounted outside, in a garage, or in a utility area. In
addition, the unit can be house powered via a power pack.
